The xx Scoop Mercury Prize

Just look at the joy on their faces! You can tell that winning the most prestigious award in British music meant everything to fun bags, The xx, last night.

The London three-piece, triumphed after album 'xx' saw off heavyweights, Paul Weller, Biffy Clyro and Dizzee Rascal to win the award and £20,000 prize, voted for by leading industry figures.

The band were installed as early favourites, which came as no surprise to me as the album has been played non-stop on every office I have worked in for the last 2 years. (If the Temper Trap had been British this would have rivalled The xx in the 'Seriously, who has put this on again?' stakes.)

A late flurry of bets saw old timer, Weller, be installed as the favourite on the night despite not making a decent album since 1995's 'Stanley Road'. Perhaps fans got confused and thought this was the Brits Lifetime Achievement Award?

Personally I think that Foals should of won, but even if they had you wouldn't have got many more smiles from frontman Yannis Philippakis.

Anyway, well done The xx. Cheer up eh?
