The Sunday before last I took a trip to Innocent's '5 for 5' pop-up cafe in East London for lunch, tempted by the idea of getting 5 of my '5 a day' for only £5 (having spent a couple of weeks skiving off eating enough fruit and veg!)
The cafe was only open for a week, from the 1st of October, with a menu by celebrity chef Gizzi Erskine. The setup looked great and was held in a big warehouse-like space. It had been made to feel like a country fĂȘte with bunting and pots of herbs dotted around, with everyone sat down communally on wagamama-style wooden benches.
For £5 you could choose either a starter and a main or a main and a pudding. I had root vegetable bhaji with grilled paneer and sag dhal for a main and poached pear with quince ice cream for dessert. Drinks were available separately - naturally it was This Water and Innocent smoothies on the list (however, the thought of getting 7 rather than 5 a day was just a bit too daunting for me!)
The food was pretty good, but although I love the concept of having 5 servings of fruit and veg in one meal, it has to be admitted it wasn't exceptional (my friend said the bhaji was dry and didn't finish it).
It was a fantastic idea; however I was left wondering which specific Innocent product they were looking to promote? It could equally have been promoting the government's '5 a day' healthy eating campaign. Of course the theme of a '5 a day' does relate closely to their products, but the food in their Veg Pots wasn't the food on the menu. This was slightly confusing as the event wasn't specifically promoting their drinks either. I heard a couple at another bench asking one of the organisers whether it was a money-making scheme.
All in all though I enjoyed it. The idea of '5 for 5' for an event is great as it taps into the appeal of grabbing a bargain as well as the desire to live more healthily. The event had a really friendly, relaxed atmosphere with a boutique feel that conveyed the personality of the brand brilliantly - if not a specific Innocent product!
